The costs: Grand theft, housebreaking, vandalism
The story: In 2001, Winona Ryder was arrested for stealing roughly $5,000 price of garments from Saks Fifth Avenue in Beverly Hills. Regardless of the shop’s a number of requests to drop the fees, the district lawyer’s workplace refused to take action, and Ryder was ultimately convicted of grand theft and shoplifting.
Satirically, the trial (and Ryder’s nice outfits for its length) started a longstanding friendship between herself and Marc Jacobs, whose garments she was convicted of stealing. She first appeared in his spring 2003 marketing campaign, they usually have remained associates and collaborators since.
In a November 2002, Washington Publish article concerning the trial, author Robin Givhan wrote of Winona that “She could also be a shoplifter, however she has impeccable style.”
