Former Central Financial institution Governor Riad Salameh has been arrested following an intensive interrogation by State Prosecutor Decide Jamal Hajjar on the Justice Palace.
The arrest, which came about on Tuesday, comes amid ongoing investigations into alleged embezzlement exceeding $40 million from the Central Financial institution.
Salameh was questioned for 3 hours, with the interrogation specializing in the Optimum agency and its dealings with the Central Financial institution. The investigation scrutinized the contracts associated to the shopping for and promoting of treasury bonds and LBP certificates of deposit, in addition to the commissions earned by the agency.
Following the arrest, Justice Minister Henri Khoury said, “The judiciary has spoken, and we respect its determination.” Salameh has since been transferred to the custody of the Inside Safety Forces.
This arrest marks a major improvement within the ongoing authorized battles surrounding Lebanon’s monetary sector, with Salameh being one of the crucial outstanding figures beneath investigation.
