Gary Younger, the unique drummer of ’90s indie rockers Pavement, has died at age 70.
“Gary Younger handed on immediately,” Pavement frontman Stephen Malkmus posted Thursday (Aug. 17) on X (previously Twitter). “Gary’s pavement drums had been ‘one take and hit document’…. Nailed it so properly. rip.”
Matador Information, which launched Pavement’s beloved 1992 debut album Slanted and Enchanted, additionally paid tribute on X. “We had been exceedingly fortunate to know the superb human, drummer, producer and solo artist Gary Younger,” the unbiased label’s account shared together with a black-and-white photograph of the artist. “A lot love immediately to his household, mates and bandmates.”
Younger was born in Mamaroneck, New York, in Might 1953 and began his music profession in Stockton, Calif., within the Nineteen Eighties by reserving acts to play the realm. Malkmus co-founded Pavement with guitarist Scott Kannberg in Stockton within the late ’80s and the band launched its debut EP, Slay Tracks (1933-1969) — recorded at Younger’s Louder Than You Suppose Studio — in January 1989. After two extra EP releases in 1990 and 1991, Pavement dropped their first full-length, Slanted and Enchanted, in April 1992.
The seminal mission — remembered as one of the crucial influential albums of the ’90s — peaked at No. 152 on the Billboard 200 chart in 2002 because of a Tenth-anniversary reissue. In 2017, in recognition of the LP’s twenty fifth anniversary, Billboard revealed an article with the headline: Pavement’s ‘Slanted and Enchanted’ Turns 25: Why the Good-Ass, Slacker Masterpiece Is the Definitive Indie Rock Album.
Younger was fired from Pavement in 1993 apparently after his antics on tour — largely fueled by a consuming drawback, based on his bandmates — got here to a boiling level. The drummer reunited with Pavement in 2010 for 2 reveals.
He went on to launch three tasks with the band Gary Younger’s Hospital between 1994 and 2004 and in addition put out the solo album Malfunction in 2016.
