A uncommon native rodent that hasn’t been seen for greater than 30 years has been rediscovered at Wilsons Promontory, south-east of Melbourne.
The inhabitants of the endangered broad-toothed rat, identified for its chubby cheeks, has been declining in Victoria for many years.
This is because of habitat destruction in addition to predator cats and foxes.
Zoos Victoria native rodent biologist Dr Phoebe Burns stated the uncommon rats have been “actually relaxed, actually docile little guys”.
“They seem to be a very easy goal for predators,” Dr Burns stated.
Researchers carried out a survey of the grassy space and located the rats’ droppings.
They quickly managed to entice, establish and launch one in every of them.
