Flyleaf’s Lacey Sturm has one of many extra distinct voices in rock and steel, and one artist particularly impressed her to push that voice and scream.
Throughout an interview with Rock Feed, Sturm was requested which artist made her wish to make arduous rock music versus one other model. She cited Pantera as certainly one of her greatest inspirations, including that her brother appreciated them and that they grew up in the identical city that the band was from — Arlington, Texas.
“You knew the place Dimebag [Darrell] lived and walked previous his home. In Halloween, that they had like these large claws that seemed like a monster was gonna pull the home on the bottom on prime of the roof. It was this cool factor, legendary. And we went to this junior excessive that they went to. So you would look them up within the outdated yearbooks,” Sturm recalled.
One other artist that she cited as an enormous inspiration was Nirvana. The singer mentioned that she appreciated pop music when she was younger, naming Mariah Carey and Paula Abdul as a few of her absolute favorites. However her brother went to see Nirvana play dwell, and listened to their tape in her room, and her love for rock music grew from there.
“And there was one thing about that, that was completely different than something I would heard in music, that it was like, it wasn’t simply to entertain you. It was an expression of one thing that I did not notice you would specific via music, as a result of it was a large number,” Sturm defined. “And I wasn’t a musician, however I used to be, like, ‘That is so… There’s one thing about this.’ And I fell in love with Nirvana.”
Sturm then mirrored again on her discovery of Pantera, and admitted that she did not like their music at first due to Philip Anselmo’s screaming. It wasn’t till she learn the lyrics within the booklet that she gained an appreciation for what their songs had been about.
“I am, like, ‘Oh, wait. That is the one option to sing these lyrics, is to scream them.’ And I used to be, like, ‘I wanna scream some stuff too. The world’s a large number.’ So then me and my brother began bonding over Pantera. And I wrote certainly one of my first songs screaming simply due to my brother. And I assumed there’s an acceptable time for that, and it is a good kind [or] medium of, you realize, artwork.”
