David Krumholtz is a sight for sore eyes by the point he reprises Bernard in Episode 5 of The Santa Clauses. He was final seen in The Santa Clause 2, and the Disney+ sequel collection reveals how the beloved elf managed to flee The Escape Clause.
Krumholtz originated the position of Bernard in 1994’s The Santa Clause. He returned for the 2002 follow-up, however sat out 2006’s The Santa Clause 3 — partly as a result of he was dedicated to CBS’ Numb3rs, and partly as a result of his position had been “devalued.” So when the threequel hit the large display screen, Bernard’s former protégé Curtis was head elf, and Bernard acquired nary a point out. (Impolite!)
Sixteen years later, The Santa Clauses provides Bernard stans the closure they deserve. Proper off the bat, we’re advised that he left the North Pole for Kribble-Krabble, the elf equal of Rumspringa, and by no means got here again. “I met somebody,” he reveals. “A human. So I made the leap and gave up everlasting youth.”
However he didn’t hand over everlasting youth for simply any unusual human. He gave up everlasting youth to marry… Dame Vanessa Redgrave. Sure, actually. Don’t consider us? Check out the framed photograph he retains in his satchel!
Scott is fast to level out that Redgrave, an Oscar winner for 1977’s Julia, is 85 years younger, however the 1,600-year-old elf assures us that their age distinction hasn’t impacted their relationship. “We’re a number of hundred years aside,” he acknowledges, “however we nonetheless discover issues to speak about.” As a result of love is love, damnit, and that’s all there’s to it.
And that, children, is the story of what occurred to Bernard. Happy? Perplexed? Some mixture of the 2? Hold forth in Feedback.
