Funcom has launched Dune Awakening on PlayStation 5 and Xbox, bringing its open-world survival experience inspired by Frank Herbert’s Dune and the recent films to console players.
The console release arrives alongside a major update that adds new content and improvements, while also bringing more than 15 months of updates and additions from the PC version to consoles from day one.
With Dune: Part Three scheduled to premiere on December 18, Funcom is also releasing a new DLC inspired by the look of the recent Dune films.
Dune: Awakening Comes to PlayStation 5 and Xbox
Dune: Awakening is now available on PlayStation 5 and Xbox, with the Xbox version also included with Xbox Game Pass. Game Pass members can purchase the Deluxe or Ultimate Edition with a 20% discount.
The game is fully Xbox Play Anywhere enabled, allowing progression to carry across Xbox consoles, the Windows Store, ROG Xbox Ally and Xbox Cloud Gaming.
Cross-play between platforms is also planned, although Funcom says this will arrive after launch.
Film-Inspired Filmic Archive DLC
Alongside the console launch, Funcom has released the new Filmic Archive DLC across all platforms.
The DLC allows players to customise their characters, equipment and bases with items inspired by the Dune films. This includes the Caladan Stormcoat worn by Duke Leto and Paul in Dune: Part One, as well as the Aegis of an Unwalked Path armour inspired by Paul Atreides’ visions of the Fremen holy warriors in Dune: Part Two.
The pack also includes 73 Sardaukar building pieces, along with additional decorative items, weapons and emotes. The Filmic Archive DLC is priced at $9.99.
A Major Update for Console and PC
The console launch comes with a substantial update that is also available on PC. The PlayStation 5 and Xbox versions include the additions and improvements released for the PC version since its launch, giving console players access to the game’s expanded experience from day one.
A full single-player mode is now available, covering the game’s content and features. Players can also customise their experience in much greater detail, with options to adjust harvesting rates, experience gain, death penalties and other gameplay settings.
The update also adds hours of new story content, bringing the conclusion of Book One of Dune: Awakening’s cinematic story, alongside a range of performance and gameplay improvements.
15 Months of Updates Come to Console
The latest update builds on more than 15 months of additions and changes made to Dune: Awakening since its original PC release.
One of the biggest changes is that PvP is now completely optional, allowing the entire game to be played as a PvE experience. The Deep Desert endgame has also been split into PvE and PvP instances, with the PvP version offering greater risk in exchange for greater rewards.
Funcom has also reduced some of the game’s harsher penalties. Players can save their bases, recover their vehicles and no longer have to deal with taxes, while the death penalty has also been reduced.
The endgame itself has been rebuilt around missions and the player’s progression through the ranks of either the Atreides or Harkonnen factions.
New Progression, Combat and Endgame Content
The expanded version of Dune: Awakening also includes new maps, dungeons, weapons and dynamic encounters, alongside additional progression systems in the form of Augmentations and Specializations.
Combat has also been refined, with particular attention given to the game’s action systems and melee combat.
For new console players, that means the version launching today is considerably larger and more developed than the original release. Existing PC players, meanwhile, receive the same major update alongside the console launch.
With its PlayStation 5 and Xbox release, expanded single-player options, extensive gameplay customisation, rebuilt endgame and more than a year’s worth of additional content, Dune: Awakening is now available as a substantially expanded version of Funcom’s open-world survival take on the Dune universe.
