Dylan Faden Steps Into The Chaos
After years of confinement at the hands of the Federal Bureau of Control, Dylan finally emerges into a world that has become considerably stranger during his absence.
Manhattan is being warped by a mysterious cosmic entity, with the Hiss, the Mold and other paranatural threats spreading beyond the familiar confines of the Oldest House. Dylan has new powers at his disposal, but learning how to use them is only part of the problem.
He’s also searching for his sister, FBC Director Jesse Faden, while attempting to understand exactly what has happened to the world around him.
The result is an expanded setting for the CONTROL universe, with Dylan exploring different zones of Manhattan rather than being confined to the locations players will remember from the original game.
Reality Has A Habit Of Misbehaving
CONTROL has never been particularly interested in behaving like a conventional action game, and Resonant continues that tradition.
Dylan’s paranatural abilities are central to the experience as he battles the various threats that have spilled into Manhattan. The sequel also expands the series’ approach to combat, exploration and storytelling as Remedy looks to make the world itself feel bigger and more unpredictable.
And according to Creative Director Mikael Kasurinen, that ambition was very much deliberate:
“CONTROL Resonant is the result of nearly seven years of true team effort and collaboration that pushes our paranatural action RPG series into an expansive, reality-warping playground of choice, power, and consequence. For our new players, you don’t have to know the first game to jump into this sequel. We’ve made this easy to pick up and hard to put down. For our returning fans, we’ve pushed the scale beyond anything we’ve done before, elevating combat, exploration, and storytelling into a bigger, more memorable experience. It’s ambitious, a little wild, thought-provoking and was never easy to create, but easy was never the goal! Now that CONTROL Resonant is here, we can’t wait for our players, both old and new, to get lost in it.”
The CONTROL World Gets Bigger
We’ve already spent time with CONTROL Resonant, awarding it 4/5 in our review. Our review notes that the sequel successfully continues the foundation established by the original while expanding the world, although the changes to melee combat may prove more divisive depending on personal preference.
Ultimately, we found plenty to like in the return to Remedy’s paranatural world, particularly for anyone keen to see where this strange universe can go next.
CONTROL Resonant is available now with the Standard Edition priced at £49.99, while the £58.49 Deluxe Edition adds a Digital Artbook, Original Soundtrack, Untapped Artifact, Starter Resource Bundle and AWE Mission Outfit.
For a series built around the idea that reality can stop making sense at almost any moment, a warped Manhattan feels like a pretty appropriate next destination.
