Bitcoin Traders Have Nearly $100 Billion Riding on What Comes Next
Bitcoin spent the week bouncing between $75,038 and $81,710, but beneath that relatively tidy range, the derivatives market has become a much bigger beast. Bitcoin’s price is hovering around $81,273 on Saturday, Sept. 19, up 4.2% over the past day, while futures open interest sits around $56.3 billion, and options open interest is hovering near $42 billion.

Put those markets together, and bettors have close to $100 billion in open derivatives exposure tied to bitcoin. That doesn’t mean $100 billion is waiting to be won or lost, but it does show just how much money is riding on where bitcoin goes from here.
Binance Leads Futures While CME Isn’t Far Behind
The futures board is stacked. Coinglass.com statistics on Saturday show that Binance holds the largest slice shown in the data, with 144,810 BTC worth $11.77 billion in open interest, accounting for 20.89% of the market. CME follows with 107,450 BTC, or $8.74 billion, and a 15.5% share.
Behind those two, Bybit and Gate each carry about $5.36 billion, while MEXC sits at $4.78 billion. Hyperliquid holds another $3.47 billion, and OKX has $3.12 billion. The rest is spread among venues including Bitget, Kucoin, Bitunix, and BingX.
What’s interesting is that all this positioning isn’t being accompanied by frantic short-term expansion. One-hour changes are mostly fractions of a percentage point. MEXC was up 0.34%, Bitunix added 0.64%, Bitget gained 0.22%, and Bybit rose 0.17%. On the other hand, the perp DEX Hyperliquid slipped 0.47%, and OKX dropped 0.21%.
Zoom out, though, and futures open interest has clearly picked up steam since August. The data shows aggregate exposure climbing from well below $50 billion toward the mid-$50 billion range as bitcoin recovered toward $80,000.
Options Traders Have a Pretty Obvious Favorite
Then there’s the options market, where the positioning gets more interesting. Calls account for 60.74% of bitcoin options open interest, representing 311,306.86 BTC. Puts make up 39.26%, totaling 201,232.2 BTC.
The 24-hour flow leans the same way. Calls represented 59.01% of volume, or 30,277.53 BTC, against 21,028.15 BTC in puts. Calls give traders the right to buy at a predetermined price, while puts provide the right to sell. A heavier call share can reflect greater demand for upside exposure, although options are also widely used for hedging and multi-leg strategies, and while bullish, the current split is not a clean directional vote like it was last week.
Still, the contracts sitting at the top of the board are hard to ignore. Deribit’s Sept. 25 $70,000 call carries 10,916.3 BTC in open interest, followed by the $85,000 call at 10,202.3 BTC and the $90,000 call at 9,544.1 BTC. A Dec. 25 $80,000 call holds another 9,033.7 BTC.
Sept. 25 Is Where Things Get Crowded
September’s expiration is where the action really piles up. Beyond those enormous $70,000, $85,000, and $90,000 calls, the options exchange Deribit shows 8,641.5 BTC sitting in the Sept. 25 $70,000 put, while the $100,000 call carries another 7,193.4 BTC. The $82,000 and $80,000 calls hold 6,922.5 BTC and 6,489.7 BTC, respectively.
Trading volume is also concentrated near bitcoin’s current neighborhood. The Sept. 25 $85,000 call leads 24-hour volume at 2,270.9 BTC, followed by the $82,000 call at 1,251.1 BTC and the $80,000 call at 797.4 BTC. The $74,000 put clocks in at 753.3 BTC, while the $81,000 call records 744 BTC.
In plain English, traders aren’t clustering around one fantasy number way off in the distance. A great deal of activity is packed around strikes bitcoin could conceivably encounter without requiring the market to go completely off the rails.
Max Pain Sits Below Bitcoin’s $81,273 Spot Price
Here’s the wrinkle. Several max pain readings sit below bitcoin’s current price. Max pain is the strike where the greatest value of outstanding options would expire worthless at expiration. It is a positioning metric, not a prediction, but traders watch it because large expirations can produce some fascinating positioning dynamics as settlement approaches.
For the Sept. 25 expiration, Deribit’s chart places max pain around $72,000, alongside the largest notional block on its curve. Binance sits around $76,000, while OKX is near $75,000. With bitcoin at roughly $81,273, all three are below spot.
The gap is particularly eye-catching on Deribit. Bitcoin would have to surrender roughly $9,000 from its current level to reach that Sept. 25 max pain area. Later expirations move all over the place: Deribit’s curve rebounds toward roughly $78,000 for some dates before eventually falling toward $60,000 by June 2027, while Binance and OKX show their own shifting concentrations.
A Big Week Is Sitting on the Calendar
None of this guarantees bitcoin is headed toward $90,000, $70,000 or any other strike decorating the options board. Open interest tells us where contracts exist, not where bitcoin must trade, and max pain is particularly easy to mistake for a forecast when it isn’t one.
What the numbers do reveal is a market carrying an enormous amount of positioning into the coming expirations. Bitcoin has already traveled from $75,038.12 to $81,674 this week, calls command more than 60% of options open interest, and some of Deribit’s largest individual contracts expire Sept. 25.
That leaves bitcoin sitting above the major venues’ Sept. 25 max pain levels while traders have stacked substantial call exposure at $82,000, $85,000, $90,000 and even $100,000. The market has spent the week moving higher. Now comes the fun part: finding out how much of that derivatives positioning can survive expiration.
